A terrace with a retractable roof and sun protection

For this project in Aluche, we installed a motorised retractable glass roof combined with a fabric awning (toldo playero). The solution brings together two elements: a roof whose opening can be adjusted and an awning to shade the space below.

Both photographs show the same installation. One shows the roof and terrace together; the other shows the roof from the seating area and the position of the awning.

To assess a similar solution, we review the dimensions, available supports, roof travel and sunlight. The configuration is adapted to each space.

Retractable roof and fabric awning: two complementary functions

Motorised retractable glass roof

The roof panels slide to adjust the opening above. In this project, the roof is motorised.

The available opening depends on the panel arrangement and the space needed for the stacked panels.

A fabric awning for shade

The awning complements the glass roof and shades the seating area when sun protection is needed.

In the second photograph, the awning can be seen retracted beside the structure.

How a retractable glass roof opens

The panels slide and stack to leave part of the roof open. This animation from CuadroVidrio’s channel demonstrates how the system works.

Example video of the system; it does not show the Aluche installation. The opening and panel travel are specified for each project.
